Description

Introduction

Exploring the terrain of a land is best done on a motorcycle and Nepal is a country with innumerable types of terrain. Nepal is also where the ice – cold, mighty Himalayas meet the lush green tropical region of the Terai plains. For the past few years Nepal has become a popular destination for motorcyclist around the world as it offers views of the magnificent Himalayas, colorful and vibrant cultures, ancient temples and monasteries, jungle safari in search of the elusive tiger and more…

This ride is one of the ultimate rides in the rain shadow part of the wind-swept desert landscape of the Himalayas with views of implausible gorges, high passes and enormous vistas passing through authentic Tibetan villages, barren ridges, eroded cliffs and Moraine valleys. Its landscape is unrivaled for it has a stupendous wilderness, pristine scenery, snowcapped peaks, spectacular monasteries and caves.

Lo-Manthang

Lo Manthang was the walled capital of the Kingdom of Lo from its founding in 1380 by Ame Pal who oversaw construction of the city wall and many of the still-standing structures. After the Shahs of Gorkha forged Nepal out of numerous petty kingdoms in the 18th century, Lo became a dependency but kept its hereditary rulers. This arrangement continued as long as Nepal remained a kingdom, until republican government began in 2008 and Jigme Dorje Palbar Bista (1933–2016) lost his title. His protector King Gyanendra suffered the same fate, however the Raja or gyelpo of Mustang was 25th in a direct line of rulers dating back to 1380 A.D. Gyanendra was only the eleventh Shah ruler since Prithvi Narayan Shah conquered Kathmandu in 1768.

Lo is culturally and linguistically Tibetan in the north (two-thirds) of Mustang District, while the southern third is called Thak, the homeland of Thakali people who speak a different language and have a synthesis of Tibetan and Nepalese culture.

Recently a series of at least twelve caves were discovered north of Annapurna and near the village, decorated with ancient Buddhist paintings and set in sheer cliffs at 14,000 feet (4,300 m) elevation. The paintings show Newari influence, dating to approximately the 13th century, and also contain Tibetan scripts executed in ink, silver and gold and pre-Christian era pottery shards. Explorers found stupas, decorative art and paintings depicting various forms of the Buddha, often with disciples, supplicants and attendants, with some mural paintings showing sub-tropical themes containing palm trees, billowing Indian textiles and birds.

The village is noted for its tall whitewashed mud-brick walls, gompas and the Raja’s or Royal or King’s Palace, a nine-cornered, five-story structure built around 1400. There are four major temples: Jampa Lhakhang or Jampa Gompa, the oldest, built in the early 15th century and also known as the “God house”; Thubchen Gompa, a huge, red assembly hall and gompa built in the late 15th century and located just southwest of Jampa Gompa; Chodey Gompa, now the main city gompa; and the Choprang Gompa, which is popularly known as the “New Gompa”.

Day 03: Ride from Kathmandu to Bandipur (1035m/155kms/5-6hrs)

The journey begins as we gear up and ride out of the Kathmandu Valley, leaving behind its bustling streets and urban rhythm. The ride descends through Naubise and merges with the Prithvi Highway, one of Nepal’s main arterial routes connecting the capital to the western regions. The initial stretch offers a mix of city traffic and sharp bends, gradually opening up into smooth, scenic roads lined with terraced fields, charming roadside villages, and dramatic views of the Trishuli River carving its way through the hills below. As we cruise along the highway, we pass through key junction towns like Galchi and Mugling, where the air turns fresher, and the scenery more expansive. The route then veers off at Dumre, leading us on a gentle uphill ride into the hills toward Bandipur, a beautifully preserved hilltop town that once served as an important trading post between India and Tibet.

Riding into Bandipur feels like stepping back in time. Cobbled stone paths, traditional Newari houses with intricate woodwork, and a peaceful, traffic-free town square welcome us. Nestled at an altitude of 1035 meters, Bandipur rewards travelers with sweeping views of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges, especially magical during the golden hour. The cooler hill air, panoramic mountain vistas, and tranquil ambiance make it a perfect destination to unwind after the day’s ride.

Day 04: Ride from Bandipur to Tatopani (1190m/175kms/6hrs)

After a peaceful morning in the charming hilltop town of Bandipur, known for its cobbled streets and panoramic Himalayan views, the journey today descends into the heart of the Gandaki region, weaving through diverse terrains and cultural landscapes on the way to Tatopani.

Departing Bandipur, the ride takes you downhill to Dumre, reconnecting with the Prithvi Highway, where smooth tarmac roads lead westward through bustling towns like Damauli and Pokhara, Nepal’s adventure capital. If time allows a brief stop in Pokhara offers a refreshing view of Phewa Lake and a distant glimpse of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain) standing tall in the skyline. From Pokhara, the road gradually begins to twist and climb as you follow the Kali Gandaki River upstream towards Beni, a gateway to the trans-Himalayan Mustang region. The road conditions start to change here shifting from paved highway to rugged mountain trails, with sections of gravel, rock, and occasional streams crossing your path. It’s a thrilling transition, where the smooth hum of asphalt gives way to the raw adventure of off-road riding.

As you approach Tatopani, nestled along the riverbank and surrounded by lush green hills, the landscape becomes more dramatic—deep valleys, cascading waterfalls, and rustic villages built into the hillside. The name Tatopani translates to “hot water,” and true to its name, the village is home to natural hot springs. After a long ride, a dip in these rejuvenating thermal waters is the perfect way to unwind.

Day 05: Ride from Tatopani to Muktinath (3800m/70kms/6hrs)

Today marks one of the most exhilarating and spiritually significant rides of the journey, as we ascend from the lush river valley of Tatopani to the sacred temple town of Muktinath, nestled high in the trans-Himalayan region of Mustang.

The ride begins with a thrilling off-road ascent through Ghasa, Lete, and Kokhethanti, offering awe-inspiring views of the Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri ranges. The road here is rough and narrow, carved into the cliffs alongside the roaring Kali Gandaki River, known for being the deepest gorge in the world. Waterfall’s spill from the steep slopes above, and the smell of pine forests fills the air as we pass through alpine villages and suspension bridges. Crossing Jomsom, the administrative hub of Mustang, the landscape transf orms dramatically — from green forests to arid, desert-like terrain with craggy cliffs and ancient caves. We make a short stop in Kagbeni, a picturesque medieval village with a fortified appearance, to catch our breath and soak in the stark beauty of the region.

From Kagbeni, the trail winds steeply upward toward Muktinath, one of Nepal’s most revered pilgrimage sites for both Hindus and Buddhists. Situated at an altitude of 3,800 meters, Muktinath offers a sense of serenity unlike anywhere else, with panoramic vistas of the Himalayas and an atmosphere steeped in devotion. The famed Muktinath Temple, with its 108 sacred water spouts and eternal flame, sits against the backdrop of towering snow peaks, inviting pilgrims and adventurers alike. The ride today is on and off-road and might be physically demanding, but the reward lies not only in the spectacular views and cultural richness but in the deep sense of accomplishment upon reaching this sacred highland destination.

Day 06: Ride from Muktinath to Lomanthang (3840m/120kms/6-7hrs)

Today’s journey is one of the most spectacular and spiritually enriching days of the entire adventure, as we traverse deeper into the heart of the once-forbidden Kingdom of Upper Mustang. After an early breakfast in Muktinath, we saddle up and begin our ride northward, leaving behind the sacred temples and wind-swept trails of this revered pilgrimage site. The initial section takes us downhill through the rugged terrain of Kagbeni, a medieval village where permits for Upper Mustang are checked. Here, the landscape begins to shift dramatically lush valleys give way to arid cliffs, painted canyons, and a palette of earthy reds, yellows, and browns that define the Trans-Himalayan desert.

As we ascend higher, the trail becomes more adventurous, with rough off-road tracks, sharp switchbacks, and mesmerizing panoramas of Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, and Tukuche peaks towering behind. The air thins, and the vast silence of the plateau engulfs you, broken only by the occasional flapping of prayer flags or the distant echo of hooves from local caravans. Midway through the ride, we reach Tsharang (Charang), a significant cultural stop. This ancient village, once a seat of power, features a crumbling royal palace and an exquisite, red-walled monastery (Tsharang Gompa) filled with ancient thangkas, statues, and scriptures. The village is a living museum set against dramatic mountain backdrops and windswept ridges.

From Tsharang, the road rises again, taking you across high mountain passes with panoramic views of the Tibetan plateau. The final stretch into Lo-Manthang is truly awe-inspiring—riding along a narrow ridge, you’ll catch your first glimpse of the legendary walled city tucked beneath majestic cliffs and endless sky. Lo-Manthang, with its whitewashed houses, sacred monasteries, and age-old culture, welcomes you into a world untouched by time.

By late afternoon, we arrive in Lo-Manthang (3,840m), the ancient capital of the Mustang Kingdom, where the unique Tibetan-influenced lifestyle still thrives. You’ll feel transported centuries back in time. The evening is free to relax or take a short stroll within the old city walls.

Route: Muktinath → Chhusang → Samar → Ghami → Tsharang → Lo Manthang

Day 07: RIDE AROUND LOMANTHANG (4460M/50KMS) & VISIT WALLED CITY

Today is a magical day of immersion into the ancient Tibetan-Buddhist culture and surreal landscapes of Upper Mustang. After an early breakfast, we set out on a high-altitude excursion, riding across dramatic wind-carved valleys and barren hills beyond Lo-Manthang.

Our first stop is the Old Samzhong (Samjong) Village, a secluded and spiritual settlement nestled in a remote gorge. This small village offers an authentic glimpse into the timeless lifestyle of Mustang’s Mountain people, where ancient traditions, mud houses, and terraced fields blend seamlessly with the raw natural beauty.

Continuing our journey, we ascend toward the legendary Konchokling Cave, tucked high above the Kali Gandaki riverbed. Revered as a meditation retreat by monks for centuries, the cave reveals ancient murals, relics, and panoramic views of the wind-eroded cliffs that surround it — a place where myth and landscape merge.

From here, we ride to Chhoser Cave, also known as Jhong Cave. This remarkable five-story cave complex carved into a sheer cliff face features more than 40 interconnected rooms. Once used as a monastery and ancient residence, Chhoser Cave stands as a testament to the ingenuity of early Himalayan settlers and offers a fascinating walk through time.

After soaking in these extraordinary sites, we return to Lo-Manthang in the late afternoon. As the golden sun casts shadows over the arid land, we stroll through the walled city of Lo-Manthang, a fortified medieval capital with narrow alleys, whitewashed homes, and age-old gompas. The city’s towering walls, once built to guard the kingdom, still stand tall with echoes of Mustang’s royal legacy.

Overnight at the Hotel Mandala, LoManthang

Day 08: Ride to World Highest Gulf Course and free time (3Hrs/30km/4645m)

After breakfast, we will start the day with an exciting ride to one of the most extraordinary destinations of the journey — the World’s Highest Golf Course located in the remote, windswept highlands of Upper Mustang. Sitting at an elevation of approximately 4645 meters, this golf course is not your typical green — it’s a surreal mix of alpine desert and windswept grassland bordered by the majestic peaks of the Himalayas. The panoramic views from here stretch far across the Tibetan Plateau and the snow-capped giants of Mustang. The ride to this destination itself is incredibly rewarding — a combination of open plateaus, occasional ascents, and unspoiled terrain flanked by colorful rock formations.

After visiting the golf course, continue our exploration with a free ride across the undulating hills surrounding Lo-Manthang. This is our chance to ride freely, off the beaten path, through remote trails, open valleys, and grazing grounds where you’re likely to come across local shepherds tending to their flocks of sheep and goats.

These highland pastoralists live a no madic lifestyle, moving their herds between seasonal pastures. With a bit of luck, you’ll encounter them along the slopes, where they may be resting in traditional yak-hair tents or guiding their animals through narrow grazing corridors. Engaging with the shepherds offers a unique cultural insight — many of them still follow traditional Tibetan Buddhist customs, wear distinctive high-altitude attire, and lead incredibly resilient lives in this harsh yet beautiful environment. If the timing and situation allow, take the opportunity to converse with them, learn about their practices, and observe their interaction with nature and livestock.

By afternoon, return to Lo-Manthang and enjoy a leisurely lunch at the lodge.

Overnight at the Hotel Mandala, LoManthang

Day 09: Ride Lomanthang to Kalopani (2480m/125kms/7hrs)

After a hearty breakfast in the walled kingdom of Lo-Manthang, the day begins with one of the most visually stunning and spiritually rich segments of the journey. Leaving behind the fortified city, the ride takes you off the main road and onto a less-traveled ancient trail towards Ghar Gumba and Dhakmar — two of Upper Mustang’s most mystical landmarks. As we ascend from Marang, a short ride ahead lies the Ghar Gumba (Lo Gekar Monastery) — one of the oldest monasteries in the Mustang region, believed to be built in the 8th century by the legendary Guru Padmasambhava after subduing a demon that hindered the spread of Buddhism. The monastery’s peaceful energy, ancient murals, and prayer flags fluttering in the wind offer a powerful spiritual pause in your high-altitude journey. After crossing highest motorable road of the trip, downhill ride to barren red cliffs of Dhakmar offers a wind-eroded formations and deep ochre-colored rock faces that almost glow in the morning light. This region, steeped in Buddhist mythology, is believed to be protected by divine energies, and riding through it feels like traversing a hidden valley lost in time. From here, the trail begins to descend, meandering through Chungsi Cave, Ghami, and Charang, before merging back with the main Jomsom road. The ride continues down the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the world’s deepest, flanked by towering peaks of Nilgiri, Tukuche, and Dhaulagiri. As you pass through Marpha, the legendary apple capital of Nepal, the trail transitions from dusty off-road paths to smoother tracks, offering a mix of adrenaline and relief. Eventually, you reach Kalopani, a lush, pine-fringed village dramatically framed by snowcapped mountains.

After a long but deeply fulfilling ride, Kalopani welcomes you with cooler air, a change of landscape, and a serene atmosphere perfect for a restful evening.

Route: Lo Manthang → Marang → Dhakmar → Chhusang → Kagbeni → Jomsom → Marpha → Lete → Kalopani

Day 10: Ride from Kalopani to Pokhara (810m/130km/6hrs)

Today’s ride takes you on a thrilling descent from the rugged highlands of Kalopani (2,480m) to the lush, vibrant valley of Pokhara (810m), Nepal’s adventure capital. This 130 km journey is a dramatic transition—from alpine terrain and snow-capped mountain vistas to subtropical greenery and serene lakes.

The day begins early with the fresh mountain air of Kalopani, surrounded by views of Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri, and Tukuche Peak. The road descends steadily through the beautiful Kali Gandaki Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world, flanked by towering Himalayan giants. You’ll ride past charming villages like Ghasa, Tatopani, and Beni, where the landscape gradually shifts from rocky riverbeds and pine forests to fertile terraced fields and cascading waterfalls.

The road condition varies—initial sections remain off-road and require cautious riding due to gravel, occasional landslide zones, and narrow bends. After Beni, the road improves significantly, offering a smoother tarmac ride as you cruise alongside the Modi River and past local farms and vibrant towns. Small tea stops and traditional houses dot the way, making it ideal for short scenic breaks.

As you approach Pokhara, the weather warms up and the ride becomes more relaxed. Entering the lakeside city is like stepping into a paradise of peace and comfort. Pokhara welcomes you with its laid-back ambiance, views of the Fewa Lake, and the Machapuchare (Fishtail) peak rising in the distance.

Day 12: Ride Pokhara to Nuwakot (1020m/190kms/6hrs)

After a relaxing day in Pokhara, today’s journey offers a refreshing mix of lakeside serenity, rolling mid-hills, and rural charm as you ride eastward from Pokhara to Nuwakot. The ride starts on the Pokhara–Prithvi Highway, but instead of heading directly toward Mugling, we’ll take a detour to Begnas Lake, a tranquil and lesser-known gem nestled amidst lush hills. Take a moment to enjoy the serenity of the lake and views of the Annapurna range mirrored in its still waters.

From Begnas the roads are mostly paved and well-maintained with few on and off roads and potholes up to Sundarbazar, winding through terraced hills, small Gurung and Magar villages, and lush river valleys. You’ll cross several small bridges and enjoy frequent views of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges in the distance. Passing through Damauli and Sundarbazar, the ride presents a peaceful stretch of the countryside, with fewer vehicles and a more immersive riding experience. From Sundarbazar, descend toward Mugling, a major highway junction. Here, you’ll merge onto the Prithvi Highway once again, riding east along the roaring Trishuli River.  At Galchi, leave the main highway and turn north toward Bidur, entering Nuwakot District. The final stretch is a scenic climb through forested hills and traditional Tamang villages. As you ascend, the air becomes fresher, and the landscape more serene. Arrive at the charming village of Nuwakot, perched on a ridge at 1020 meters. The town is home to the historical Nuwakot Durbar Complex, a seven-story palace built during the Malla era and offers sweeping views of surrounding hills and valleys.

Tonight, stay at the heritage-style Famous Farm, a restored traditional farmhouse offering an authentic hill-country experience. The peaceful rural setting and traditional architecture make it an ideal stop to unwind after a rewarding day’s ride.

Day 13: Ride Nuwakot to Kathmandu (1400m/60Kms/3hrs)

After a peaceful night in the tranquil hills of Nuwakot, the journey back to Kathmandu begins with a scenic ride through the lesser-traveled countryside route via Chhahare and Tokha. As you leave the rustic charm of The Famous Farm, the road meanders through quiet villages, terraced farmlands, and lush forested sections. The initial stretch is a blend of dirt tracks and narrow blacktopped roads, offering a more intimate view of rural Nepal away from the main highways.

The route climbs gently through the ridge of Chhahare, a pristine and serene area known for its panoramic views of the surrounding hills and distant snow-capped peaks. With minimal traffic, this route gives you the chance to enjoy the rhythm of village life—locals tending to fields, children walking to school, and traditional homes dotting the hillsides.

As you approach Tokha, an ancient Newari town on the northern edge of Kathmandu Valley, the scenery shifts. Here, you begin to feel the slow re-entrance into urban civilization. The cobbled paths, red-brick buildings, and historical temples of Tokha offer a final taste of Nepal’s rich cultural tapestry before you descend into the bustling heart of Kathmandu.
